I first met Phil in the early 1980s when he was part of the talented team at Spyder Engineering, led by Vic Moore and Geoff Price. Spyder's speciality was producing beautifully engineered replacement chassis for classic Lotuses - and Hethel's lawyers were in the process of trying to close them down for infringing Lotus's copyright. Vic and Geoff were horrified at the prospect of losing their business overnight and the lawyers were clearly expecting a walk-over. However, that's not what they got. I managed to see them off by proving that, although Spyder's replacement chassis were necessarily dimensionally similar, they were ........
